Project of the Month- June Support for orphans in Zimbabwe Appeal for Zimbabwe We have all heard of the appalling situation in Zimbabwe where government policies have led to led to sharp falls in production and precipitated the collapse of the agriculture-based economy. The country has endured rampant inflation and costs are continually rising. People are suffering from shortages of food, fuel and foreign currency. In addition to these problems Zimbabwe now has the dubious honour of being the world's most infected country from HIV/AIDS - about a quarter of the adult population is HIV positive. In many urban areas, infection runs to 40%. A member of our congregation, Violet, has been supporting orphans from her own limited resources. She writes: “I have all these years been helping orphans back home in Zimbabwe. I now support two children who are in secondary education. They are both in boarding school. I thank God a third child finished her A levels and I have managed to get her a scholarship to study in Australia. She went out on May 1st this year.
The two are Lance aged 15 years and Mellow aged 13 years. Their parents died of HIV/AIDS. Taking care of the psychological needs is not easy. They also need school fees which is paid in South African Rand – R2 400 equivalent to £240 each – and also their uniforms. I spoke to the lady who looks after them and said they need shoes this term which cost R600 = £60 for the two. Because of the economic situation in Zimbabwe parents have to supply groceries and accessories, such as light bulbs, for the school.” I would like to make support for Lance and Mellow our charitable cause for this month, June. I hope Violet will be able to speak briefly about their situation at 10.45 on Sunday 14 th June and there will be an opportunity to donate that Sunday and others. Please give generously.
