175th Aniversary celebrations

This year is the 175th Anniversary of St George's Church which was dedicated on the 24th of June 1840. The actual parish was originally consecrated in 1776 so is 239 years old.

As part of our celebration we held monthly events. These started with a parish meal in February, followed by a highly enjoyable evening of Ten-Pin Bowling on 20th March. The next event was on a 'Folk Train' in April when a group travelled by train from Manchester to Glossop and were there entertained with an evening of Jewish Folk Music before returning to their point of departure.

Our main events over our Anniversary weekend, started with an open day on Saturday the 20th of June when visitors looked round the historic Church and Graveyard, and view old parish registers and historic photos of our past Rose Queens and of views of both Old and New St Georges.

In the evening there was a concert given by Tameside Community Voices Choir.

The Bishop of Middleton presided and preached at our 10:30am Service on Sunday the 21st June.

This was followed by a bring and share lunch. The day was rounded off with a 'Songs of Praise' evening service at 6:00pm.

Our next event was a Ladies Day on the 1st of August with afternoon tea and a display of Hats and Frocks as you can see.

In October we held a video race Night with sponsored horse races to cheer on.

On Sunday the 15th of November we had a parish celebration meal after the Sunday morning service. Venue was at the Stamford Golf Club, and as you can see here a great time was had by all.
